DOLORES CHENEY GIFT TO YOUNG PEOPLE & SIDNEY HICKS SCHOLARSHIP
FOR SUMMER STUDY IN THE ARTS

On Saturday, May 6, the Center for Community Arts (CCA) presented the Ninth Annual Dolores Cheney Gift to Young People: Scholarships for Summer Arts Study, and the First Annual Sidney Hicks Scholarship, at its Dolores Cheney Youth Arts Fair at the Richard M. Teitelman School in Lower Township.

Dolores Cheney, a founding board member of CCA, nurtured many children during her lifetime and understood the importance of the arts in children’s lives. The fair is named in her honor and the scholarships in her name are funded by the generous support of members of the Cheney family.

Sidney Hicks, a Cape May resident who was actively involved in the lives of many of youth in CCA’s YAP Youth Arts Program, left a bequest to CCA to create another scholarship in the spirit of the Dolores Cheney Gift to Young People. The first of these was awarded to Lauren Murphy of Cold Spring to study jewelry.

The stipends can help pay for a summer camp in the arts, or for performing arts or fine crafts classes during the summer months. Students must submit a written application and be interviewed by the Scholarship Selection Committee. During the summer, recipients perform community service, and in the fall, each recipient will make a presentation about their summer study to the Center for Community Arts Youth Arts Program.

This year’s recipients of the Dolores Cheney Gift to Young People will study painting, saxophone, acting, pottery, drawing, jewelry, dancing, and guitar. Recipients are (left to right): Izabela Lotozo (of West Cape May), Dennis McVay (Erma), Rosie Johnson (WCM), Lily Mullock (WCM), Richard Ferrer (WCM), Lauren Murphy, Leatrice Spiewak (Wildwood Crest), Brandie Newman (WCM), Victoria McFarlane (Villas), and Shamus Magee (Cape May, not pictured).
