Work on the Franklin Street School is progressing! Nationwide Services is finishing up the environmental remediation, and has begun exterior work to stabilize the cornice. Very exciting. The Center for Community Arts has so many new things going on! Work on rehabilitation of the Franklin Street School, which we are transforming into a community cultural center, is proceeding, but we still need your help! The planning phase of the Franklin Street School Rehabilitation Project is supported by the New Jersey Historic Trust, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Black United Fund of New Jersey. Phase I of the rehabilitation is made by possible by the many individuals and businesses who have contributed to the first year of our Franklin Street School Capital Campaign. The four-phase project is scheduled to be complete by 2008, at a cost of $2 million.

African American Heritage Walking Tours of Cape May.
Every Saturday through September 25, 2004
10:00 a.m. Approx. one hour. Hear Cape May's untold stories as you walk the west side of downtown, from rumors of Harriet Tubman, to the blacks-only beaches and USO, the thriving African American business, social and religious community and the fate of the segregated Franklin Street School. Meet at the Center for Community Arts office, 712 Lafayette St., near Franklin St. $10 adults, $7 age 12 and under. No reservation is needed--we'll see you at 10:00 a.m.! SATURDAY NIGHT YOUTH ARTS PROGRAM IN WILDWOOD
The Center for Community Arts announces a special summer series of YAP-Saturday Night in Wildwood. The Center’s YAP, or Youth Arts Program, provides free art workshops and pizza for youths ages 11-14, on Saturday Nights from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Youths will explore various media, including paint, pastels and print-making.

The program is free, but parents must sign a permission slip in person the first time the youth attends. No pre-registration is needed. The program will be led by local artist-teacher Tina Giaimo, and other guest artists. Prizes of day-passes to Morey’s Piers or Water Park will be given to youths who arrive on time and attend all six sessions.

The dates are June 12, 19, and 26 and July 10, 17 and 24.

The program will take place with the cooperation of the Healthy Community Coalition at their Kare Center, 3120 Pacific Avenue, at Pine Street in Wildwood. For further information, please call 884-7525.

SUMMER ARTS CAMPS IN CAPE MAY, LOWER, WILDWOOD
The Center for Community Arts announces its expanded YAP (Youth Arts Program) summer arts camps in Cape May, Lower Township and Wildwood, for youths ages 11-14. Each week, youths will experience a different medium or theme. The program is designed by Janet Payne, the Center’s Curriculum Coordinator, YAP Saturday Night Teacher in Cape May, and the art teacher for the Star of the Sea School. Campers may attend any combination of one or more weeks, but are required to attend all five days of a given week in order to complete projects. All materials and a snack are included. The art works created will be displayed in the fall at the Noyes Museum of Art in Oceanville, NJ, and at locations to be announced in Cape May County.

The Cape May program is open to all regardless of residence, and free to 2003-04 participants in the Center’s YAP Saturday Night Program. The Lower and Wildwood programs are free to residents of Lower Township and the Wildwoods respectively, but advance registration is required. Each week is limited to 25 participants. The Cape May program, at 712 Lafayette St., is mornings, Monday – Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and will be taught by Janet Payne and Tina Giaimo. Week of June 28: Sculpture; July 5: Pastels; July 12: Art for Your Room; July 19: Papier Mache; July 26: Printmaking; August 2: 3-Dimensional Weaving; August 9: Art to Wear; August 16: Jewelry. Cost is $80 per week, with discounts for four or more weeks.

The Lower Township program, at the Recreation Center in the Villas, is afternoons, Monday – Friday, from 2:00 – 4:45 p.m., and will be taught by Tina Giaimo and guest artists. Week of June 28: Jewelry; July 5: Sculpture; July 12: Pastels; July 19: Art for Your Room; July 26: Papier Mache; August 2: Printmaking; August 9: 3-Dimensional Weaving; August 16: Art to Wear.

The Wildwoods program, at Wildwood High School, is mornings, Monday – Friday, from 9:00 – noon, and will be taught by Tina Giaimo. Week of August 2: Pastels; August 9: Printmaking.
