ART WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS
Center for Community Arts, in partnership with the Nature Center of Cape May, announces its Art of Vitality workshop series for seniors and other adults. Most are visual arts workshops and consist of four sessions of two hours each on consecutive weeks, and take place at the Nature Center, 1600 Delaware Avenue. In addition, there are free weekly poetry workshops at CCA’s office, 712 Lafayette Street, Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m.
Art instructors are Judy Ballinger, who holds a B.A. in Art and an M.A. in Education, and is a practicing artist in various media; Tina Giaimo, a local award-winning professional photographer and owner of Spirit Catcher Gallery in Cape May; and Jody Swope, whose art work has been exhibited in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and in galleries throughout Philadelphia.
Workshops include:
· Book Arts with Judy Ballinger. Make decorative papers and use them with other materials to create original books and booklets. Thursdays, 1-3 p.m., Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23, March 2. Materials are provided; you may wish to bring fabric, ribbons, lace, etc. $50 for five sessions; $30 seniors; $5 off CCA members.
· Nature Studies: Gifts from the Winter Beach with Judy Ballinger. From drawing and painting to mixed-media and assemblage, we will use shells, seaweed and other beach treasures as objets’d’art and medium. Fridays, 10 a.m. – 12, Feb. 3, 10, 17, 24. Materials are provided; you may also bring personal items. $40 for four sessions; $25 seniors; $5 off CCA members.
· Scarf Painting with Judy Ballinger. Use special fabric paints to design and paint a silk scarf. Mondays, 7-8:30 p.m. Session I: Feb. 6, 13, 27. Session II: March 6, 13, 20. *Location: Center for Community Arts, 712 Lafayette Street. $30 for three sessions; $20 seniors; $5 off CCA members.
· Papier Mache for Adults with Judy Ballinger. Design and create functional items: vases, trays, figurines. Fridays, 10 a.m. – noon, March 3, 10, 17, 24. $40 for four sessions; $25 seniors; $5 off CCA members.
· Chinese Watercolor Parasols & Art as Meditation with Jody Swope. Discover the relaxing art of Chinese watercolors and create a hand-painted paper parasol and fan. Combine art, guided imagery and relaxation techniques as a tool for self-expression. Tuesdays, 10 a.m. – 12, March 7, 14, 21, 28. $40 for four sessions; $25 seniors; $5 off CCA members.
· Nature Studies with Judy Ballinger. Explorations with mixed media and collage. Wednesdays, 1 – 3 p.m., March 8, 15, 22, 29. $40 for four sessions; $25 seniors; $5 off CCA members.
· Quotable Art with Jody Swope. Combine the mixed medium of collage, painting and small objects to create a foundation for your favorite quotes or poems. Optional: bring a small chair, table, stool, tray, birdhouse, etc. as one vehicle for this medium. Thursdays, 1 – 3 p.m., March 9, 16, 23, 30. $40 for four sessions; $25 seniors; $5 off CCA members.
· Art as Meditation with Jody Swope. This half-day workshop focuses on guided imagery together with art as a tool for self-discovery. Saturday, March 11, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. $20; $15 seniors; $5 off CCA members.
· Art of Floral Design with Jody Swope. Learn the art of flower arranging in vases and various creative containers as well as creating “Tiny Gardens Under Glass.” Most supplies are included, however you will be asked to bring your own containers each week for the arrangements. Please bring a small vase to the first class. Tuesdays, 10 a.m. – noon, April 4, 11, 18, 25. $50 for four sessions (includes special supply fee this class only); $30 seniors; $5 off CCA members.
· Beginner/Intermediate Photography with Tina Giaimo. Learn the basics of photography using a 35mm camera. Discover how to capture the moment and create your own hand-tinted photographs. Tuesdays, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., April 4, 11, 18, 25. $40 for four sessions; $25 seniors; $5 off CCA members.
· Art Inspired by the Sea with Jody Swope. Use the sea and its creatures as inspiration to create sea art for your garden or home. Various media will be used. Please bring a collection of gathered shells and any other treasures you find on the beach. Thursdays, 1-3 p.m., April 6, 13, 20, 27. $40 for four sessions; $25 seniors; $5 off CCA members.
· Tiny Gardens Under Glass with Jody Swope. Learn how to create a miniature garden as the Victorians did. Bring a glass container suitable for a terrarium, and any miniature furniture or decorative objects you would like to use in your garden. Plants and other materials will be provided. Saturday, April 8, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. $20; $15 seniors; $5 off CCA members.
· Intermediate Photography with Tina Giaimo, Tuesdays, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., May 2, 9, 16, 23. $40 for four sessions; $25 seniors; $5 off CCA members.

Cape May, New Jersey's Center for Community Arts (CCA) is transforming the Franklin Street School into a community cultural center. CCA creates arts programs for youth and adults, community history programs, exhibits and tours celebrating Cape May's African American heritage, and community outreach events, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday Party, and Hotel and Guest Night, the Cape May Talent Sampler (8/27/07).
